Our 4th Annual Dermatology Study Day for Healthcare Professionals

On Saturday, 6th April we hosted our fourth annual Dermatology Study Day in the Ashling Hotel, Dublin. The programme was aimed at healthcare professionals with an interest in dermatology. Attendees came from all branches of nursing, pharmacy and general practice.

The objective of the study day is to provide healthcare professionals with an opportunity to enhance their current skill set when encountering patients with dermatological conditions in the community. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points were awarded for attendees.

Our stellar line-up of expert speakers and programme included:

Dr Aizuri Murad, Consultant Dermatologist, The Mater University Hospital Dublin, who spoke on the topic of Alopecia, including the different types and approaches to this condition.

Anne Roche of Roche’s Hair Replacement, Kimmage Dublin, who followed Dr Murad’s talk with practical advice and options for all types of hair loss.

Aisling O’Shaughnessy, CNS Dermatology, University Hospital Limerick, who spoke about common skin conditions in paediatric dermatology. These included atopic eczema, Impetigo, mulluscum contagiosum and types and treatments of Haemangiomas in children.

Dr Síona Ní Raghallaigh, Consultant Dermatologist, Beaumont Hospital Dublin, who covered the management of rosacea. Dr Ní Raghallaigh gave a detailed overview of causes, contributing factors, types and treatments available for rosacea.

Deirdre Conlon, Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Plastic surgery, University Hospital Galway, who gave a comprehensive overview on the management of burns and abrasions. Deirdre offered attendees practical advice and tips on the first-aid management of burns and abrasions in the community, before emergency department referral.

Kelly Impey, CNS Dermatology, Tallaght University Hospital Dublin presented on the recognition and practical care for those living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). Her presentation covered diagnosis, management, treatments and the impact (both physical and psychological) of living with HS. Kelly also gave some information on self-care tips for people with HS.

Dr Rupert Barry, Consultant and Mohs Micrograpic Surgeon, St James Hospital Dublin, concluded the programme for the day with an excellent presentation on skin cancer recognition: a macroscopic and dermatoscopic diagnosis.

Attendees had the opportunity to visit exhibitor stands, learn about products on the market for various skin conditions and to pick up samples.

We were delighted with the very positive feedback we received from attendees and can determine that the day was a success.
